Skip Logic

Skip logic shows a question only when a condition is true. A question about the size of a herd appears only when the answer to "Do you keep livestock?" is Yes. Without skip logic, every user sees every question.

Skip logic also applies to a Nested Form and to a Separator. A Nested Form with skip logic appears only when its condition is true. A Separator with skip logic hides its heading and text, not the questions under it.

Adding skip logic to a question

  1. Open the question's settings and click the Skip Logic tab.
  2. Click Add a condition.
  3. Choose the question to check in Select question, an operator, and a value.
  4. Add more conditions if you need them. Then choose whether the question needs all of the conditions or any of them.
  5. Save the question.

The question is hidden until its conditions are true. "Show when" is the rule. There is no "hide when".

Operators

The operators depend on the type of the question you check.

Type of the question you check Operators
Integer, Decimal, Percent, Range, Date, Time, DateTime Was answered, Was not answered, equals, not equal, greater than, less than, greater than or equal, less than or equal
File, Image, BarCode, GeoLocation, GeoArea Was answered, Was not answered
Every other type, including Text and the Select types Was answered, Was not answered, equals, not equal

For a Select One or Multi-Select question, you pick the value from the question's own options. For a Date, you pick a date. For a number, you type a number.

Common patterns

Goal Condition
Show B only when A has an answer A Was answered
Show B only when A is blank A Was not answered
Show B when A is Yes A equals yes
Show C when A is Yes or B is Yes Two conditions, A equals yes and B equals yes, with any
Show a section of follow-up questions Give each question in the section the same condition

Hidden questions and their answers

A hidden question is not submitted. Its value is blank in the record, and a calculated field that reads it sees a blank. See Auto Calculated.

A Required question that is hidden does not stop the submission. It is required only when it is shown.

If the user answers a question and a later change hides it, the answer is cleared.

Things to watch

  • Chains. If B depends on A, and C depends on B, then C is hidden whenever A hides B. Check the whole chain when you change a condition.
  • Loops. Do not make A depend on B and B depend on A. Neither question can appear.
  • Changed options. If you change the value of an option that a condition uses, update the condition too.
  • Order. A condition can check any question on the form, but it is clearer for the user when the checked question comes first.
